The Latin Mass, Part I
We could easily apply the American motto to the Catholic Church, because while each of its billion plus members has a unique personality each must adhere to faithfulness to and unity in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. After the Second Vatican Council, the Church experienced at least two major causes for disunity: breakaway sects that did not recognize the Council (SSPX) and liturgical abuses in the new vernacular Mass that seemed to disregard awe, reverence and the sacred. In response, Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI liberalized the celebration of the Latin Mass in the hope that its sacredness and reverence would influence the Church’s liturgy around the world. That did not happen, and Pope Francis’ Motu Proprio Traditionis Custodes is his effort to restore unity. Aired 7/24
