God is Great

Why do we say God is great? And why do we so often say that phrase only in response to a good thing that has happened? Do we only glorify God in our happiness? Where is the joy in our sorrow? We don’t always know the answers because, as St Paul tells us, “…how unknowable are his ways.” (Romans 11:33) Did Job think God was great, after losing almost everything? Yes, because he maintained his faithfulness, believing that God’s intentions for him were good in contrast with Satan’s. As Joseph (of the coat of many colors) tells his scheming and traitorous brothers, “What you meant for evil God meant for good.” (Genesis 50:20)
